Project details
Introduction/Overview:
CEMS Consult engineers successfully designed the Ash Disposal Facility (ADF) for Eskom’s Kusile Power Station, one of South Africa’s largest and most complex power generation projects. This state-of-the-art ADF is engineered to provide 60 years of disposal capacity, supporting the long-term operational needs of the power station.
The facility comprises a meticulously designed ash disposal area, multiple Pollution Control Dams (PCDs), and Clean Water Dams (CWDs), ensuring efficient management of ash and water systems while prioritizing environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
A key feature of the design includes an innovative river diversion system constructed beneath the ADF body, consisting of large concrete pipes designed to safely convey river flows without compromising the integrity of the disposal facility. This critical infrastructure element ensures uninterrupted natural water flow, preventing environmental disruption and enhancing the overall sustainability of the project.
CEMS Consult’s expertise in engineering, hydrology, and environmental management played a pivotal role in delivering a tailored solution that meets Eskom’s stringent operational and environmental requirements.
